Creating a harmonious work-life balance can be extremely difficult in this fast-paced and demanding world and sometimes It becomes so easy to lose sight of what’s truly important.

With a million and one distractions around every corner we very often get sucked into a way of living that isn’t congruent to our overall wellbeing.

Even worse there is a huge number of people out there, that are totally oblivious that they are living out of balance.

Experiencing increased anxiety, stress and depression, many fail to realise that much of what they experience is symptomatic of the lifestyle choices they make.

Sadly, for so many people working flat out all-hours, is often the only way of working they’ve ever known and inevitably over a period of time it can often lead to burnout or them crashing.

So, this is one of the many reasons why it’s important to establish balance in your life – AND MAKE IT A NECESSITY!

Creating a more harmonious work-life balance is essential for your emotional and mental health, the quality of your relationships and your overall wellbeing.

First of all – What is work-life balance???

It refers to the amount of time and energy you spend on family, leisure, relaxation and things you enjoy outside work.

Basically – it’s the way you achieve a balance between work and the rest of your life.

A work-life balance means counterbalancing time spent on professional work with time spent on personal, social and leisure activities.

Doing the things that make you happy as opposed to the things that keep you busy!

Some people say they enjoy work so much that it becomes their life which could be considered both very sad and unhealthy!

Work tends to bleed into  every aspect of their lives including their family time and home-life, and this is definitely not a good thing!

It’s important to frequently have time out and a shift of focus and energy away from the stress of work to rejuvenate yourself.

Some of the signs that you may be living in imbalance are:

• Regularly working late at the office

• Answering business emails when you’re at home;

• Prioritising work over socialising with friends or family – even just thinking about work when you’re not at work.

Good work-life balance means making time for yourself and your leisure and personal interests, partner, children, parents, friends, neighbours and community.

Archieving work-life balance is a highly valuable form of self-care and something that everyone should make time for.

So, how do you do it I hear you ask?

Here are my 7 tips to help you to achieve a good work-life balance.

7 tips for work-life balance

1. Leave work at work

• Establish a routine and set your boundaries: decide to ONLY work during specific hours – whether that’s 9am – 5pm, or 7am – 2pm and 7 – 9pm.

• Do not allow work to infringe on your family or social time. Keep this sacrosanct. That means NOT looking at your work emails or messages; not taking work home with you, and not even thinking about work matters while you’re at home, out socialising or spending time with other people.

• Put the work phone away. If you have previously made it known (by word or action – i.e. answering and making calls) that you are available evenings, holidays and weekends, let your staff know that you are now unavailable and are not to be disturbed. Confirm this by leaving your business phone well out of your way, and switching it off until working hours.

• Disable emails from your phone. Don’t access work emails from your personal phone. To remove temptation, uninstall your business email apps. Keep business out of your personal life, and off your personal communication devices.

2. Schedule time for what/who you love

• Allocate days or times in the week to follow your passions – whether it’s swimming each day at 7am, reading a book for an hour before bed, cooking on Saturday afternoons, or playing golf on Sunday mornings. Make a date with your passion – and commit to it.

• Make it a priority to participate in activities that bring a sense of fulfilment or reward – e.g. finish painting the bedroom (or that landscape); volunteer each week at the local foodbank; study for that degree; learn to play that instrument; join that fitness class or weight-loss group.

• Dedicate time to be with those you love – and spend time with friends. Human interaction and connection; love, laughter and discussion are all incredibly valuable.

3. Set realistic timeliness

• A lot of the work stress we experience comes from us setting unrealistic deadlines for the completion of tasks. Trying to complete tasks within a limited time-frame pushes us to work longer hours and moves us into a ‘fight or flight’ stress response in order to complete the tasks.

• Give yourself – and your clients or boss – a realistic deadline by which you will complete work within normal working hours / days – this gives you the opportunity to take a measured approach to the work, switch off and relax when you’re not at work, AND achieve.

4. Unplug from technology

• Too many people spend time in a virtual world – especially if they access messages, texts, emails and calls at home or in their own time, while with family and friends. Switch off your communication devices and leave them out of reach.

• When you come in from work, place your phone far away from you – in another room, or in a drawer somewhere you can’t be tempted to sneak a peek.

• Make some rules for yourself:

· ‘no laptops’ after a certain time. There is always an excuse to Google something, which often makes you check your messages and emails. Before you know where you are, you’re working again.

· No phones at dinner – or in the morning. Keep it strictly to working hours, so you’re not tempted

• Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by media and away from real life. Be fully present in the moment.

5. Maintain a home landline/phone

• We contact  many friends via Whatsapp or text-message – who chat rubbish in a group or send you photos of their meal. But there are very few we take the time to talk to on the phone. This demonstrates the strength of certain relationships.

• Keep a ‘home phone’ – especially if you plan to lock your mobile away. This allows you to monitor and maintain the quality of your relationships. You are likely to only give your landline number to people you truly want to speak to for a meaningful purpose. Then, if you are called on the phone, it’s likely to be for a good reason that’s not work-related.

6. Work smarter not harder

• When you are working, manage your time better. Look to become more efficient in how you work.

Don’t try to take on everything yourself. Delegate tasks to other people – often they can do it better, and it frees up your time.

• Don’t get caught up in petty tasks that keep you busy, but are not productive.

• Prioritise your goals.

• Concentrate on the objectives and actions that add real value to your goals.

• Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by media and away from real life. Be fully present in the moment.

7. Allocate family time

• Just as you schedule your working day, designate time to your family.

• Spend a regular hour before school and work chatting over breakfast, or an hour before bed reading stories or playing games with your kids, having a ‘date night’ every Friday or going away for a weekend – dedicate time and yourself solely to them.

• Be fully present with them – in mind as well as body, to get the most enjoyment out of every experience and build closer relationships.

Use these tips to manage your time and communications, and create a system for maintaining a better work-life balance. You will achieve a less stressful existence and peace of mind, gain pleasure and enjoyment, and closer, more fulfilling relationships. It’s holistic self-care for your mind, body and spirit. And when you’re rested, feeling good, and motivated from gaining more balance in life, your performance at work will benefit, too.
