How can you be more successful? By practising a regular morning routine or ritual, before you even start work.

Extremely successful people have certain disciplines they practise each morning that prepare them for their day. This sets them up for work ahead, feeling grounded and calm, able to focus on achieving their professional and personal goals.

This isn’t because they are innately amazing people. If it works for them, it works for us. Tried and tested, as modelled for us by successful people who are disciplined in maintaining these rituals each morning – include some of them in your daily schedule and watch as your life is transformed.

Here are some of those morning rituals –

Get up early

Set the alarm early to get ahead for your working day. People like Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and even Einstein were all out of bed and at work several hours before anyone else. Think what you can do with all that extra time, while you’re fresh – well before anyone else opens their eyes. You can do the rest of these rituals, for a start! It’s especially quiet and calm as dawn breaks. Maybe you’ll see some great skies. You’ll feel like the only person in the world (awake). It really gives you a great start to the day – and gets you a head start with work.

Use visualisation

Visualisation is an incredibly powerful means of achieving your goals. For 5 minutes, close your eyes and focus on what you want, or what you want to achieve. Visualise your wishes, desires, intentions and goals. Make a vivid picture of what you want to achieve in the future. Then, make it multi-sensory. make an emotional connection and engage all your senses in the experience. You will feel either a buzz of excitement and energy or a deep feeling of contentment, use visualisation to see your day going just as planned, taking you nearer to achieving your goal. You’ll feel motivated and goal-orientated to be much more productive in your working day.

We all have a wash in the morning – right? But how clean are you on the inside? Remove toxins and help your digestive system through a detox practice you can easily do each morning. One simple detox you can do to cleanse your system and boost digestion is to drink warm or hot water, with some lemon juice or lemon slices. You can add other flavours: raw honey, ginger, turmeric, or cinnamon. All of these will aid your physical health and mental wellbeing: either helping your digestive system, washing out toxic elements and having beneficial anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects, too.

Do some exercise

Not only is exercise vital for our own physical health, exercise releases hormones like oxytocin that make us feel happy. As well as pumping oxygen-carrying blood to all our vital organs, exercise oxygenates our brains, helping our thought processes and decision-making. Include a regular short session of exercise at the start of your day, and your energy levels and productivity will rocket. You don’t have to go to the gym for hours or run marathons – even if you’re a couch potato, you can build more exercise into your daily life, just by walking to work – even part-way, or spurning the office lift to climb the stairs.

Feel grateful

Many people tend to focus on problems they have, and the challenges they need to meet – which brings their spirits down. Successful people focus on what’s good in life, and all the things they are grateful for.

Keep a gratitude journal or just take time every day to list what you’re grateful for – your health, partner, children, house, job, nature…

Turning your attention to the good things in life really raises your spirits and your energy. We have an in-built sensor that draws our attention to what our mind focuses on (Have you ever really wanted a particular car? Then, you suddenly become hyper-alert and notice that model every time one drives by?). So, if you focus your mind on the positive, you notice more positive things in your life. Feeling grateful emphasises all the positives, so you feel immediately luckier and happier, attracting even more luck, happiness and positivity into your life.

Prioritise your goals

A great time management skill that demonstrates the difference between successful people and those who are unsuccessful is prioritisation. What do you want to achieve? Have your main goal or vision in mind and identify a couple of tasks or actions that will really progress you further towards that major goal. Focus attention and take action on these tasks, first thing in your working day. It is a proven fact that the most successful people do the most important task to achieve their biggest goal first. Even though it might be the hardest task, it will pay the biggest dividend. Motivational expert Brian Tracy refers to this as ‘eating the frog’. It might seem too hard or dreadful, but get it over with, and everything else afterwards seems easy. Once you’ve done that important task, you can then deal with the other, less important tasks.

Practise these disciplines regularly – and you will find that not only does your day go more smoothly – you will feel far better emotionally, mentally and physically, your productivity will accelerate and your success will be assured. Try them, stick with them, and reap the benefits.
