If you don’t already know it, podcasting is a very big deal! US stand-up comedian and MMA commentator, Joe Rogan, recently signed an exclusive deal with Spotify, which – according to the Wall Street Journal – was worth a whopping $100 million dollars. This strategic move by Spotify demonstrates the popularity of podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience and similar shows, as the mainstream begins to wake up to their true value. In this article, I want to share the value that podcasts offer entrepreneurs and to recommend the 5 top podcasts for entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Cutting-edge, prime time
Podcasts tailored towards entrepreneurs, leaders and business-minded individuals are highly valuable tools enabling you to tap into the minds of the very people whose success you aim to emulate. It’s extremely common for most highly successful entrepreneurs and CEOs to publish a book of some sort, providing snippets of their brilliance and business knowledge. But, given the fast pace of technological innovation and the continuous evolution of human behaviour, in a very short space of time, these books and written materials can soon become redundant.
On the other hand, tuning into one of the many weekly podcast shows tailored towards business, personal development and personal transformation allows you to stay fresh and up-to-date with the current entrepreneurial world. With many of these shows featuring elite business moguls of these times, including guests like Mark Cuban, Jeff Bezos and Jack Dorsey – you hear valuable insights straight from the horse’s mouth.
There is an immediacy to listening to podcasts. While many busy people – especially businesspeople – claim they don’t have time to read books and articles, reading just doesn’t suit people who want to know the details fast, without much preamble. Podcasts cut to the chase – they give you the essence of entrepreneurial thinking, in a nutshell. Soundbites and summaries in your pocket.
Another advantage to podcasts is that they are there in your mobile, easily accessible and ready when you are – even when you’re on the go. It’s easy to multitask and learn at the same time as you’re doing mundane or mechanical things. Have your favourite podcast on loudspeaker while you’re driving. Or listen through earbuds while you’re exercising; queuing for the supermarket; waiting for an appointment; commuting on public transport or cooking dinner. Or listen to podcasts while your partner’s watching TV – or even while you’re lying in bed ready to sleep. Take every opportunity to learn from the experts and develop yourself, your mindset and your businesses, even in your ‘down-time’.

4. How I Built This– with Guy Raz
Guy Raz is a journalist, correspondent and radio host, working at National Public Radio. He has been described by The New York Times as “one of the most popular podcasters in history” and his podcasts have a combined monthly audience of 19.2 million downloads. In this series, he dives into the stories behind some of the world’s best known companies. How I Built This weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists, and the movements they built. For example, in How I Built Resilience: Live with Tobias Lütke and Jon Stein, Guy talks to Tobias Lütke who created Shopify to empower merchants to start small and build resilience. He explains the rise of Shopify sign-ups during the pandemic. Jon Stein started Betterment in the wake of the 2008 recession, and explains why this economic downturn could be the perfect time to start a company. These conversations are excerpts from our How I Built Resilience series, where Guy talks online with founders and entrepreneurs about how they’re navigating our turbulent times.
5. The Success Rebellion – Ryan Jackson
I may be the new kid on the block of podcasting, but I have a lifetime of entrepreneurship and personal development behind me that has taken me from being a school drop-out from a working-class estate to a successful serial entrepreneur with a multimillion pound turnover, as well as being a powerful success coach, motivational speaker and author of The Success Rebellion. My podcast enlightens people to become better a version of themselves, through interviewing global figures. Guest include Richard Bandler, agent of change and co-creator of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), a methodology to understand and change human behaviour patterns. We discussed the power of self-talk, creating success and overcoming addiction and phobias to achieve greatness through the use of verbal and non-verbal communication to alter the human brain. (You will be shocked at some of his stories!). With Ryan Martin, natural health and nutrition expert, I discussed the vital topic of immunity and how gut health impacts our overall health. Ryan explains how to understand what is happening in your body to take control of your healing. Ex-drug baron William Rodríguez Abadía was once a leader of the Cali Cartel, one of the world’s most powerful criminal networks. His father and uncles, the Orejuelas, were key players in the international drug trade as well as being established businessmen in Columbia. We talk ‘Narcos’, but William is now invested in sharing the truth of this lifestyle and now aims to steer people away from the dangerous path of crime, towards a future filled with success and what he calls “tranquilo”.
